Description
We have a couple of different footwear add-on items that can really help when you're on icy trails that would otherwise have you reduced to a crawl or suffering through a unsafe trek. Use the microspikes on trails where there is periodic ice - say in early Spring on the high Grand Canyon trails. Use the crampons for heavier ice or snow conditions, such as in the Sierras or Denali. Select your preference with the dropdown box - the crampons will be at a higher cost.
These are good items to rent as most hikers simply don't have a frequent need for them. No special boots are required for either style - just slip the spikes over your shoes and strap down - but stiffer boots are best with the crampons if you have them available. There's also a little more going on with the crampons for fitting, but it's pretty intuitive on how to fit them.
The microspikes come in sizes based on your shoe size, but there's some flexibility on either size of the range. For examples, the medium is suggested as ideal for 7-10.5 for men and 8.5 - 11 for women, and the large is suggested at 10.5 to 14 for men. However, each will fit at least 2 sizes on either side, so the mediums will fit down to 6.5 for women as an example. In the comment box at checkout add your actual shoe size so we'll know what is the best spikes size for you that we have available. It doesn't matter much for the crampons, as there is only one size and they are more adjustable - the same pair will generally fit anyone from women's size 6 up to at least size 15 men's.
Another great option when it comes to snow is our snowshoes. We have these available to rent here. Check them out!
